Seafarers, security and carbon reduction: three important missions of IMO
International Maritime Organization (IMO) meetings began with the 11th session of Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC), marking an important starting point for future developments in the maritime industry.

PMO News Portal - In his opening remarks at the meeting, Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), highlighted several key points as the IMO’s agenda for 2025.

He stated: “We begin 2025 by focusing on three main themes: seafarers, global security and carbon reduction. These themes will not only impact the current performance of the maritime industry, but will also shape the path of development and innovation in this area.”

Permanent Representative of the Ports and Maritime Organization highlighted: “The year 2025 is recognized as a turning point in issues related to the maritime and shipping industry, and significant developments are expected to occur in these areas.”

According to Pouria Kolivand, in the new year, key and vital issues that will completely transform the future of these industries will be on the agenda. These issues include the IMO greenhouse gas strategy, future fuels, autonomous ships and reform of seafarer training laws and regulations.

He added: “There will also be special attention to seafarers as the main focus of the industry. The next generation of the maritime industry will belong to seafarers who have key competencies in the areas of artificial intelligence and combining maritime knowledge with new technologies. These changes will not only require new and up-to-date training for seafarers, but will also be an opportunity to develop their skills and capabilities in a complex and evolving maritime world.”

The Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC) considers a wide range of technical and operational matters related to ship design and construction, including subdivision and stability. The Sub-Committee also covers testing and approval of construction and materials, load lines, tonnage measurement, safety of fishing vessels and the carriage of industrial personnel.
