About IMO

The mission of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as a specialized agency of the United Nations, is to promote safe, secure, environmentally sound, efficient and sustainable shipping through cooperation.
IMO currently has 171 Member States, three Associate Members, and 77 international non-governmental organizations in consultative status with IMO.

Role of Iran in IMO

Since 1958, Iran is a member State in IMO. Some of the major actions of Iran in relation to the IMO are as follows:

  • Accession to 30 IMO Conventions and Protocols
  • Membership in Panel of experts for setting Goal-Based New Ship Construction Standards (GBS) and evaluation of rules of recognized organizations to match with the Recognized Organizations Code (RO Code).
  • Membership of some of the PMO experts in IMO audit panel and Participation of 2 of them in audits made by 3 IMO Member States.
  • Selection of five maritime experts in the list of IMO experts qualified for evaluation of various IMO member State for effective implementation of International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
  • IMO Membership for 3 Consecutive Periods in 1991, 1993, and 1995
  • Membership in Pilot group studies of Greenhouse Gas emissions from ships in 2013-2014
  • Membership in the list of 6 states of IMO Pilot Audit.

PIANC is the global organisation providing guidance for sustainable waterborne transport infrastructure for ports and waterways. PIANC is the forum where professionals around the world join forces to provide expert advice on cost-effective, reliable and sustainable infrastructure to facilitate the growth of waterborne transport.
Regarding The attendance of secretary General of PIANC at The 9th and 10th sessions of the biennial International Conference on Coasts, ports and Marine Structures (ICOPMAS 2008,2010,2012,2014) and also high Scientific and executive level, the permanent Secretariat of the Conference has started its official work as the qualifying member since 2010.

PIANC-Iran Mission is to Bring together the best international experts, both public and private, on technical, economic and environmental issues pertaining to waterborne transport infrastructure.

By providing technical reports and guidelines subjecting different issues in the field of waterborne infrastructures along with holding international conferences and meetings, PIANC aims to help scientists, researchers and young professionals all around the world to communicate and cooperate in order to find the best solutions for marine and coastal areas problems.

 International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA)

About IALA
The International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), established in 1957, brings together representatives of the aids to navigation services of about 80 countries for technical coordination, information sharing, and coordination of improvements to aids to navigation throughout the world. This association, which is based near Paris, has 4 types of Membership: National, Associate, Industrial and Honorary Members. 

 

Role of Iran in IALA
Since 1957 Iran has been a Member of IALA considering the sensitive situation of the Strait of Hormuz, Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman in terms of shipping and the necessity to strengthen maritime safety and prevent collisions at sea, the cooperation of PMO and IALA, using the technical experiences and progresses is of high importance.

 International Hydrographic Organization (IHO)

About IHO
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) is an inter-governmental consultative and technical organization that was established in 1921 to support safety of navigation and the protection of the marine environment.
The object of the IHO is to bring about:
  • The coordination of the activities of national hydrographic offices
  • The greatest possible uniformity in nautical charts and documents
  • The adoption of reliable and efficient methods of carrying out and exploiting hydrographic surveys
  • The development of the sciences in the field of hydrography and the techniques employed in descriptive oceanography
Role of Iran in IHO
Since 1961 Iran has been a Member State of the IHO. Some of the services of the Islamic Republic of Iran are:
  • Coordination of the hydrographic activities (hydrography) 
  • Unified nautical charts and documents
  • Exchange of technical information through active participation and cooperation in IHO International conferences
  • Enactment of the accession to the IHO Protocol, 2005 in the parliament

International Labour Organization (ILO)
About ILO
The International Labor Organization (ILO) was founded in 1919, after the World War I, with the mission of codifying international labor standards in form of conventions and recommendations considering the workers. This organization cooperates with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regarding the issues related to maritime labor.

 

Role of Iran in ILO (related to maritime labor):
Iran is one of the first Member States of ILO and in relation to maritime labor has acceded to these conventions:
  • Seafarers Identity Documents, 1958 (Convention)
  • Maritime Labor Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006)
 
It should be noted that accession to the convention 185 (convention revising the Seafarers Identity Documents Convention, 2003) is enacted by the parliament, but the accession document has not been deposited yet. Consequently, convention 185 is not yet entered into force for Iran.
