About IMO
The mission of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as a specialized agency of the United Nations, is to promote safe, secure, environmentally sound, efficient and sustainable shipping through cooperation.
IMO currently has 171 Member States, three Associate Members, and 77 international non-governmental organizations in consultative status with IMO.
Role of Iran in IMO
Since 1958, Iran is a member State in IMO. Some of the major actions of Iran in relation to the IMO are as follows:
- Accession to 30 IMO Conventions and Protocols
- Membership in Panel of experts for setting Goal-Based New Ship Construction Standards (GBS) and evaluation of rules of recognized organizations to match with the Recognized Organizations Code (RO Code).
- Membership of some of the PMO experts in IMO audit panel and Participation of 2 of them in audits made by 3 IMO Member States.
- Selection of five maritime experts in the list of IMO experts qualified for evaluation of various IMO member State for effective implementation of International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
- IMO Membership for 3 Consecutive Periods in 1991, 1993, and 1995
- Membership in Pilot group studies of Greenhouse Gas emissions from ships in 2013-2014
- Membership in the list of 6 states of IMO Pilot Audit.

Sixty-seventh session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 69)
