IOPC Fund Convenes 29th Extraordinary Session
The 29th Extraordinary Session of the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPC Funds) Assembly opened on April 28 in London, with Focus on Legal Frameworks and Compensation Policies, bringing together member states of the 1971 Convention and the 1992 Protocol, including the Islamic Republic of Iran.

PMO News Portal - The session began with a training workshop outlining the structure, legal basis, and operational scope of the IOPC Funds, which serve as a key international mechanism for compensating damages caused by oil pollution from tankers.

Delegates reviewed current financial reporting procedures, examined recent oil pollution incidents, and discussed proposals for procedural amendments to the 1992 Fund Assembly’s Rules of Procedure.

Call for Updates to Three-Decade-Old Protocol

A major point of discussion was the need to modernize aspects of the 1992 Protocol, which has served as the legal foundation for oil pollution compensation for over 30 years. Representatives highlighted the importance of aligning the framework with evolving maritime risk profiles and operational realities.

Iran’s Active Participation

The Iranian delegation participated actively in the session and extended condolences regarding the recent fire incident at Shahid Rajaee Port.

Their presence reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to international maritime cooperation and environmental protection.

The session is scheduled to conclude on May 2 following detailed deliberations on institutional, legal, and financial matters.
