A large container feeder lost stability and capsized in half at a private jetty on DP World’s MICT Terminal at Mundra Port on 7 January.

While loading and unloading containers, the 17,500 dead weight tonnage Sea Xpress vessel listed portside and then listed on the pier to starboard, leading to the subsequent loss of several containers falling into the water.

The panama-flagged containership operated by DP world reportedly lost approximately 20 containers.

The cause of the vessel lifting is yet to be confirmed.

According to broker Prevailing Shipping & Logistics India, the incident was probably brought on by poor ballasting and the vessel’s cranes’ outboard position. The local authorities are conducting further investigations on the event, nonetheless.

Some five hours after the incident, the ship was stabilised, according to local media sources. As of 8 January, the Sea Xpress was still anchored next to the terminal’s pier.
