ITALIAN TERMINAL OPENS
A new international container terminal in Italy has opened.

Operated by Gruppo Grendi, the ‘MITO of Sardinia’ (Mediterranean Intermodal Terminal Operator) terminal will offer customers a 350m length quay and approximately 86,000 sqm of yard in the Port of Cagliari in Sardinia. Loading and unloading operations will be fully operational by September.

"With the start of commercial operations in our new international terminal, Grendi aims to pave the ground for the set-up of an efficient international container transport network to support the restart of the port and industrial sector of Sardinia,” stated Antonio Musso, managing director of Grendi Trasporti Marittimi. “This project will serves both the international container volumes destined for and generated in Sardinia with a strong commitment to enlarge the business scope in the near future including transshipment operations.”

The terminal, dedicated to feeder, import and export of international volumes, officially opened on 20 July, but welcomed its first vessel on 9 July.

The Port of Cagliari is a focal point of the operational strategy of Gruppo Grendi, which through its operating company Grendi Trasporti Marittimi, handled 17,500 TEUs in the first half of 2021 in Cagliari, up 7% compared to the same period in 2020 . Customers include MSC and Hapag Lloyd.

In Sardinia, the Group already operates almost 20,000 square meters of warehouses dedicated to last mile distribution.

Grendi operates its own daily regular liner service between Marina di Carrara, in the north Tyrrhenian Sea, and Cagliari. In 2021 it launched a new liner service from Marina di Carrara to Olbia to enable a sustainable transport route and cut road emissions between the north and the south of the island
